During our many years of research and development in the field of string instruments we have not only come to highly interesting results regarding bows. These acchievements we try to cast into optimised products and thus make is available to a broad public.
A new Standard: The Arcus Hair Gauge For the optimum performance of any bow the quality and especially the elasticity of the hair is of utmost importance. The elasticity depends mainly on the cross section of the bundle of hair. To determin this on a complete bow and to make a perfect new rehair it is therefor essential to measure the volume of hair precisely. As there was no proper tool available for this purpose we have developed this hair gauge. It is laser-cut from strong stainless steel. Its nicely rounded edges protect the stick and bow hair from any damage. The two slots of different width (the thinner one for violin and viola, the thicker one for cello and bass) give a reading with 0,5mm˛ precision of all rehairs. This standard measurement (in mm˛) will also support a new level of communication and cooperation between bow makers, repair shops and musicians worldwide. These gauges are available directly from us or through our distributors. Violin- and Viola-bridges from Arcus by Despiau The bridge is the "CPU" of the instrument. It transforms the the basically horizontal vibration of bow and strings in vertical vibrations. But it also filters and modifies them and ads some additonal resonances. Its shape and material are therefor for paramount importance for the sound of the instrument. Through extensive research we came to a design of new violin and viola-bridges, which make it possible to come to the best possible sound with a vast majority of instruments. For the craftsman it is also helpful that these bridges carry only a minimum of excess wood. With Despiau (France) with have found the perfect partner for the production of these bridges. They cut them is superbe precision from the finest wood. For the perfect wood not only the even growth is very important, but also the propper selection of elasticity, hardness and density.
The cutouts of the bridges are designed in such a way that an optimum sound adjustment is possible to acchieve on almost every violin and viola. Here every tenth of a millimeter makes a difference.
Please ask your preferred violin shop for a setup with these bridges. The bridges are available in 3 sizes each.
The bridges are 22 € for Violin and 24 € for Viola. Professionals please request special prices. The correct grip is most important for the choice of the rosin. Besides that the sound should be full but not harsh, and it should also produce little dust. We where using rosin from Melos (Greece) for several years with very good results and so we asked Christos Sykiotis, who is the man behind Melos, to make for us a special series of premum-rosin in three different grades. It should be suitable for all conditions and able to be mixed with each other. The first samples already provided fantastic results, so we decided to start production and distribution instantly. A great starting point for violin is our No. 1. for viola the No. 2 and for cello No. 3. Under warm conditions we recommend a harder type, when it's cold a softer type.
The price per piece is 17 Euro. Traditional bass bows often require a very sticky rosin to acchieve an acceptable response. As the response of an Arcus bow is a lot easier, we can recommend our Nr. 3 rosin. It produces a very nice, singing sound, with very little noise. |
